How can I prepare for the Summer Science Program in 2025?

I'm pretty set on applying for the Summer Science Program and I want to start preparing. What can I be doing now to give myself the best chance to be accepted?

The Summer Science Program (SSP) is an intense enrichment program for high school students interested in astrophysics and biochemistry. Acceptance is competitive, so excellent academic performance, particularly in science and math, is essential. Here are some suggestions to strengthen your application:

1. Excel in Math and Science: For the astrophysics session, successfully completing Pre-Calculus and Physics courses in high school will dramatically aid your application. For the biochemistry session, Chemistry and Biology are must-haves. So be sure to perform well in these subjects and prove your aptitude.

2. Cultivate Extracurriculars: The SSP looks for students with a demonstrated interest in science. This might come through school clubs, science competitions, research projects, or other related extracurriculars. If you're not already involved in something like this, now is the time to start.

3. Develop Problem-Solving Skills: The SSP emphasizes hands-on, experimental learning, often requiring students to solve complex problems. Therefore, consider engaging in activities that involve critical thinking or practical problem-solving skills, such as coding, building projects, or even participating in math contests or science olympiads.

4. Network with Science Faculty: In the application process, you usually need a recommendation letter from a science or math teacher. These recommenders should be able to attest to your strengths as a student, your interest in science, and your capacity for success in an academically challenging program. Establishing a good rapport with such teachers therefore becomes critically important.

5. Personal Statement: SSP asks question about your interest in science, why you want to attend the program, and how you would contribute to the community. You will need to articulate this well in your personal statement. You might want to start brainstorming ideas for your essay now and be ready to draft and revise it thoroughly.

6. Practice for the SAT/PSAT: Some students believe high SAT/PSAT scores can bolster their applications. SSP doesn't require you to have taken these tests, but if you have, they will consider your scores.

Remember, SSP is about rigorous scientific research, passion for natural sciences, and readiness for a highly challenging academic experience. So do anything you can to show them that's who you are. All the best!
