What should I have on my to-do list for applying to Cornell?

Hello everyone. I'm in the process of applying to colleges and Cornell is a top choice for me. To those who have gone/are going through the process, could you share some items that I should probably have on my to-do list for applying to Cornell?

Here is a comprehensive list of what you should generally be focusing on in your process of applying to Cornell University:

1. Research: Start by conducting in-depth research about Cornell's individual colleges. Unlike many universities, each college at Cornell has its own application evaluation processes and priorities. The more familiar you are with these specifics, the better you can tailor your application.

2. High School Transcript: Cornell considers your grades throughout college-preparatory classes, so make sure you have an official copy of your transcript.

3. Standardized Tests: While Cornell will remain test-optional for the 2024-2025 application cycle, they will require standardized test scores again for the 2025-2026 cycle. So, if you'll be applying after that, ensure to schedule and prepare for the SAT/ACT (as per your convenience). Remember to aim at scoring in the middle 50% or above for accepted students at Cornell.

4. Extracurricular Activities: Cornell, like many selective universities, values students who display a strong "spike" or a high level of achievement in one or a few areas. Document your Tier 1 and Tier 2 activities via the Common Application or Universal College Application.

5. Letters of Recommendation: Cornell requires two teacher evaluations and a secondary school report which includes a letter of recommendation from your school counselor. Reach out early to your teachers, and make sure they are teachers who know you well, especially your intellectual depth and academic interests.

6. College-Specific Supplemental Essay: Every undergraduate college at Cornell requires a separate supplemental essay, which asks you to elaborate on why you're applying to the specific college within Cornell. Spend ample time on these; make sure your essays are tailored to each school and reflect your genuine interest.

7. Common Application Personal Statement: This essay is a great chance to share more about your personal history and who you are as an individual. A personal, effective essay can really help your application stand out.

8. Application Fee: The Cornell application comes with an $80 fee, so plan this into your budget. However, fee waivers are available for students who may need it.

9. Interviews: Cornell offers optional interviews. While not an ingrained requirement, it's a great way to show your interest in the institution and provide some extra insights which may not appear in your application.

10. Application: Start the application process on either the Common Application or the Universal College Application.

Remember, while this can be stressful, take your time to ensure your application truly represents who you are. Last but not least, don't forget to hit the submit button before the deadline!
