Music opportunities at Tufts University?

Hi folks, I'm a high school junior and I'm really into music – I play a couple of instruments and I sing. I was wondering if anyone knows about the music scene at Tufts University. Are there clubs/ensembles/classes I could take part in?

Absolutely, Tufts University has some wonderful opportunities for students who are into music. Be it academically or for leisure, you'll find a wide range of activities to get involved in.

If you're interested in the academic side, the Tufts University Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Within the program, you could take classes in music theory, composition, ethnomusicology, and music history. They also offer courses in performance practice.

Regarding ensembles, Tufts has several to choose from, including the Tufts University Symphony Orchestra, the Tufts Wind Ensemble, and the Tufts Jazz Orchestra. There are also smaller ensembles like the Tufts Flute Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and the Early Music Ensemble, among others. Many ensembles are open to all Tufts students, regardless of their major, via auditions held at the beginning of the academic year.

For singing, you have the Tufts University Chorus which is, again, open to all Tufts students. Tufts also hosts several a cappella groups, including the Beelzebubs, the Jackson Jills, and the Amalgamates, to name a few.

There are music-centered student organizations too, such as the Music Entertainment Business Society and the Tufts Composers. Plus, Tufts hosts multiple concerts and gigs throughout the year where students can perform or enjoy live music.

So, if you're passionate about music, there are numerous ways to get involved at Tufts, both inside and outside the classroom.
