How common is a 4.0 GPA in high school nowadays?

I keep hearing mixed things about how many students actually manage a perfect GPA. So, how rare is a 4.0 unweighted GPA in high school? Is it still seen as a big accomplishment, or has grade inflation made it more common?

A 4.0 unweighted GPA is still a significant achievement as it indicates that a student has earned all A's in their coursework. However, with the increased prevalence of grade inflation in some schools, you may find that a larger number of students are achieving this metric. Despite this trend, it's important to know that it doesn't diminish the hard work students put in to maintain such grades. Colleges also consider the rigor of the courses when evaluating GPAs, not just the 4.0 itself. While a 4.0 is not as rare as it once was, it remains an accomplishment that both students and educators celebrate. The most competitive candidates often complement their academic excellence with robust extracurricular profiles and strong standardized test scores. In short, a 4.0 is still something to strive for, but it's the combination of strong academics and meaningful extracurriculars that really frame the strength of your college application.
