National Society of Leadership and Success: Is It Legit?

Hi all, I just got an invitation to join the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS), I’m a bit skeptical about it. Are there people here who have joined before? If so, is it legit and are there real benefits that come with being a member?

The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is indeed a legitimate organization, and it's one of the largest leadership honor societies in the United States. It has an extensive network of more than 800 chapters across the country. Typically, students are invited to join based on academic achievement or leadership potential, and the society offers a series of leadership development programs for members, which involve online broadcasts, discussions, goal setting, and community service.

However, it's important to note that while NSLS is a legitimate organization, it may not significantly enhance your college application in the same way that more selective or involvement-intensive extracurriculars might. This is because NSLS operates on a "pay-to-join" model with relatively loose academic criteria, meaning that many students are eligible to join. Hence, membership does not inherently convey exceptional leadership skills or personal initiative.

While the benefits of being a member can include networking opportunities and leadership training, admissions officers are often more impressed by students who take a proactive role in their communities or schools. This could be leading a club, organizing an event, creating a new service, or other activities that demonstrate initiative and commitment. When considering any honor society or extracurricular activity, it's a good idea to weigh the costs and benefits and consider if your time and money might be better spent elsewhere.
