Political Science at UCLA?

Thinking about applying to UCLA for political science, anyone here in that program? Would love to hear about the course load, professors, internship opportunities, anything you think is important to know!

Sure, happy to share some insights on the Political Science program at UCLA. Firstly, one key strength of the program is its broad curriculum, which covers areas like American politics, international relations, comparative politics, and political theory. This allows students to gain a holistic understanding of the political world.

In terms of academic rigor, the course load is fairly moderate as compared to some other majors. However, like any other major, the difficulty can vary depending on the classes and professors you choose. Some students have found that classes incorporating reading and writing elements can be tough, but that they often offer the most enrichment.

Regarding professors, many of them are recognized experts in their respective fields who have published extensively. They often incorporate their own research and experiences into their teaching, providing students with 'real-world' insights. However, as you'd expect, teaching styles can vary significantly.

As for internships and other experiential learning opportunities, UCLA's location in Los Angeles plays to the advantage of political science students. L.A is a melting pot of different cultures and communities and offers access to numerous local, state, and national government offices, nonprofits, and think-tanks. Some students intern in government offices or work on political campaigns. Also, there is even a quarter in Washington D.C. program which allows students to intern in D.C while taking classes.

Overall, research and networking are vital elements of the program. Students are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities like research assistantships and networking events. UCLA also has some great student organizations related to politics that can be a great way to make new friends and network with like-minded individuals.

All things considered, the Political Science program at UCLA is highly regarded and offers numerous educational and career opportunities for its students. But, as always, the best advice is to reach out to current students or alumni who can provide a first-hand account of their experiences. UCLA likely hosts virtual and in-person events where prospective students can meet faculty, current students, and admissions representatives, so that could be a good way to gather more info. Best of luck with your decision and your application!
