What is Demonstrated Interest?

I've heard the term 'demonstrated interest' used a lot during the college application process but I'm not quite sure what it means. Could someone explain it to me, and maybe give examples on ways to show demonstrated interest to a college?

Demonstrated interest is essentially the concept of showing a college or university that you're keenly interested in attending their institution. This concept comes into play as some colleges like to admit students who they believe are likely to enroll if accepted.

How to demonstrate interest varies from college to college, but there are some general strategies that students employ. Here are a few examples:

1. Visit the campus: In-person or virtual visits indicate that you're genuinely interested in the school and willing to invest your time in learning more about it.

2. Attend college fairs and information sessions: This can be done in-person or virtually as well. By doing this, not only do you get to have your questions answered first-hand, but you also get to demonstrate interest by showing enthusiasm and attentiveness during these sessions.

3. Communication with admissions officers: Engaging intelligently in emails or other modes of communication with the admissions office can also be a form of demonstrated interest.

4. Apply Early Decision or Early Action: These application formats often show a degree of commitment to the school, indicating that it's a top choice for you.

Remember, though, not all colleges weigh demonstrated interest equally in their admissions processes. For some institutions, such as large state schools, they may not consider it at all. Others, particularly smaller, private colleges can place a higher value on demonstrated interest.

Therefore, it's crucial to review a school's admissions policies to see how they view demonstrated interest. Also remember that while demonstrated interest can be a good way to show a school that you’re eager to attend, your academic performance and other aspects of your application also play a significant role in the admissions process. Demonstrated interest is an addition to these factors, not a replacement.
