About DET score vs TOEFL score
Answered

I emailed a few universities to see if they give equal weight to Duolingo and TOEFL. All colleges reply in a way that gives equal weight to both. When they compare two applications, I believe they definitely weigh TOEFL more significantly. Sending my TOEFL score, on the other hand, would be a barrier for me. Some universities offer fee waivers, while others do not. Would I be better off taking the Duolingo test instead of TOEFL?

As a fellow international student, I would say that an English proficiency test score isn't really weighted much in the admissions process. Yes, TOEFL would be preferred since that's technically the "standard", but do remember that these tests are only meant to measure our capability in the English language. I myself took the DET than TOEFL because of the high costs and honestly, It's fine since I know that other parts of my application (GPA, Essays, ECs, etc.) are more important than an English proficiency test.
