Is AP Statistics worth it?
Answered

I'm planning on taking 3 other AP courses (AP Research, AP Calculus AB, and AP Computer Science Principles) and I want to go into the Computer Science industry. However, if I take AP Statistics, I'll have to drop my honors history class. Is it worth it? Please help!!!

From the perspective of someone who has already taken AP Statistics, it is what you make it. You can take this class because you are interested in statistical analysis, want college credit, or because you want to add some bulk to your course load that you know you can handle alongside your other AP classes. Gauge yourself and the classes you want to take. Since the rigor of each class is unique to every school, you should ask around to see if these classes are either GPA killers or easy As.

Just know this: If you can't handle four challenging classes, just don't do it. Likewise, if you have bad time management and have a hard time asking for help, just don't do it. It takes some real maturity to understand where your limits are.

Anytime you are registering for classes, ask yourself the following questions:

1) I am interested in this?

2) Why am I interested in this, and how can I make sure that interest continues?

3) Is there a purpose for taking this class?

4) Between these two options, which one leaves me with practical skills that I can use in the future?

If you do end up taking AP Statistics, here are some tips:

- Do the summer assignment immediately after it is posted. Don't wait!

- Khan Academy and Organic Chemistry Tutor are your best friends

- Create notes with so much detail that you can teach the content to a baby (This one works, trust me)

- CrackAP is suitable for practice

- At the first sign of confusion or trouble, either look it up or email/ask your teacher

Hi! I just graduated this year and took AP Stats. I got a 4 on the exam and thoroughly enjoyed the class. My completely unprofessional advice to you is to take it. With the AP exam you will have the opportunity to exempt STAT 2000 which is an entry level course that might be a requirement for you to take. For example, at my current college I have to take a Quantitative Reasoning course and STAT 2000 was exempted due to my AP Score (So I don't have to take the Quantitative Reasoning course anymore). At the end of the day though, it really comes down to what you're comfortable with taking and how much workload you're able to handle. Good luck!!!

Hi, I’ll be taking AP stats next year, and I would say it’s definitely worth it, especially for someone going for computer science, this class would be more useful than a history class for your degree, and an extra AP class can boost your weighted GPA as well as your class work, good luck and hope it helps!
