How big of a difference in admissions is a 3.98 from a 4.00?
Answered

Ending my junior year, I will no longer have my 4.00. I'm wondering if that slight difference will mean more than that between, for example, a 3.96 and 3.94, since it's now a step below perfect? Because of this step down would it be a good idea to lessen the courseload I have set up for the fall in case it falls lower?

No, your GPA is so high it could pretty much be rounded up to a 4.0. It would likely only make a slight difference in ranking. It's usually not worth lessening courseload unless you get below As/Bs in Honors or AP classes, or it makes your GPA much lower.

Honestly as long as you have a 3.94, or above you are fine. Don't try to take less challenging courses because colleges would love to see you challenge yourself it's fine even if you get A's and B's.

I don't think you should lessen your course load, colleges would generally rather see a b in an ap class than an a in an honors class, so I don't think you need to be beating yourself up over getting one a- or whatever it is. course rigor is a big factor to admissions, so dropping to easier classes could potentially be more harmful than challenging yourself and seeing slightly lower grades than you're used to
