Questions for College Tours

I'll be a first generation college student, and it makes it really hard for me to know what to look for in a college. I've been touring colleges in my area lately, and I'm a week away from my next tour. I always get stuck on what questions to ask to help differentiate colleges from each other. I'm looking to study ecology, I like study abroad, and good professors are important to me. Does anyone have any questions I should ask or things I should really look for when touring? Is there anything I should look out for?

College tours can be so overwhelming and, before i did about 10 this summer, I had no idea what to ask either! Questions that would be great to ask for what you are looking for are:

- is your ecology department a majority major within the school

- are the classes seminar (small) or lecture (between 35-100+ students) style

if you plan on living on campus ask

- is housing guarented for freshman and upperclassman or is it first come first served?

- if you plan on studying abroad ask if your housing is reserved for you when you return and if you plan on using financial aid ask if that aid follows you abroad.

- SUPER IMPORTANT IF HAVING GOOD PROFESSOR RELATIONSHIPS IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU -

- are the classes taught mostly by professors or teaching assistants, and are office hours (where you get to ask your prof questions about class and projects) required.

extra things i always ask is -

- is there research options (to help build your professional resume in college)

- and is the curiculumn open or closed (open = you pick every single class you take all four years. closed = certain classes are required no matter the major.

hope this helped!!
