Hi! I know this question is probably asked a lot, but I really want some advice! So, I'm currently a junior and I attend school in Virginia! In freshman year (and a little in sophomore year, namely PE), I totally slacked off and now I have a GPA of 2.7.. I'd really like to attend Culinary School when I graduate in the next year and a half. I'm currently deciding between the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, or Kendall College (or NLU, I guess?) in Chicago.
I've never been very good at school, per se, but I don't think I've ever been terrible either. I get decent grades: A's and B's in classes like English, History, and my extracurriculars, but math is a harder subject for me. I'm taking Honors English 11 this year, which has been relatively easy so far, and I'm currently a member of my local FFA Chapter, serving as secretary. I'm also taking an Agribusiness class & Intro to Animal Systems class, who my FFA Advisor also teaches. In my Agribusiness class, we're going to be doing an SAE (supervised agricultural experience) where we grow lettuce in our classroom hydroponic system, and donate it regularly to the food bank.
I'm also trying to set up a Farm to School program with my principal and he said that it was a great Idea and that we could have a meeting to discuss it, but he hasn't emailed me back! Sigh.. I guess if anyone is going to be busy, it's the principal. But we'll see how that goes within the upcoming months.
I took an Intro to Culinary Arts class in my freshman year, and honestly wasn't super interested. Don't get me wrong, the stuff we learned was cool and all, but I guess it was mainly just the teacher herself who kinda bummed me out! We would constantly read slides on the projector and listen to her monotone voice drone on and on about knife skills when we could be practicing them ourselves! I've learned a lot this past year, simply learning about things like Escoffier, knife cuts and skills, different dishes and cuisines, etc; basically stuff that I could have really learned in that class!
I'm taking the PSAT sometime in October, I believe the 15th, so I'll start studying for that! (I would appreciate any advice if anyone has any!)
If anyone has any information about the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, or Kendall College/NLU, such as reviews, student life, housing, etc, I'd love to hear about it!
I don't really know if I missed anything, but that's about all I can think about right now! Thanks so much for any help!
Something that can really help you is taking college classes or other weighted classes your school offers and passing them. This will bring your gpa up fastest.
If you want your weighted GPA take honors and APs but your unweighted GPA is important too, honors and APs are great but if you can't get As then maybe don't take them. Since you said you struggle with math, don't take AP Calculus, if you feel up to it though try AP Lit if you're prepared for a grind.
