What other classes/outside school things should I do?
Answered

I live in NY state and plan on majoring in Psychology in college, with my goal being to become a therapist. I'm already taking the AP Psych exam in May, but I'd like to know other things I can take/do to boost my chances, or to make my resume stick out.

Hello! You can also take AP Lit or AP Lang if they offer them at your school, as well as AP Chem, AP Bio, and I've heard AP Statistics is great for this major. Try to stay away from AP Physics or AP Calc but you can take them if you please, honestly it's not going to hurt you. Take AP World and AP US as well so that way you have more AP under your belt. The ones I just suggested not only go good with AP Psych but also will help with your major as well. Make sure to take Honor Classes as well if they are offered, and pick classes that'll match up with your major. I hope you have a great day! :D

I know that schools look for people with strong interpersonal skills, especially for a therapist career path. Having clubs that aren't necessarily psychology related can be really helpful in demonstrating that you can build community. I don't know what clubs you have access to, but if your options are limited, you can go to workshops at your local library. You can also start a group outside of school. Many libraries let you use their space for gatherings because of community engagement. Volunteering is also great because it shows how much you are about people. Personally, I have volunteered at Vacation Bible Schools and they are a great option if you are busy and can set aside one week.

Tl;Dr: Look out for social clubs at your school. They are great for demonstrating that you can connect with your peers. The library is also a great resource for finding groups and workshops, and it is easy to borrow their space and create an event yourself. Volunteering is also a great option, and there are a lot of organizations that allow you to serve in small increments in case you are busy.

If you can, it might help you to take dual enrollment classes via a community college in your area. Personally, I plan to be a neuroscience major, and I have taken Psych 101 through community college and will be taking Psych 102 in the winter this school year, and possibly will take another psych class, like abnormal psych, this next summer as well. These classes are really fun and can give you a good taste of what a college class curriculum looks like as well.
