Is psych too competitive for me to get in?
Answered

I want to become a therapist, but I know how hard it is to get in, so I'm asking if I should change majors, or what I can do to boost my chances. I feel like since my GPA isn't great

SAT: I am taking this my senior year probably

GPA:Between a 3.2/3.3 unweighted

Classes: Im taking APUSH and also AP Psych this year (All of the other classes are usual classes)

Extracurriculars:

-Three years of a varsity sport (Two years for tennis and one year for track and field)

- Two days of job shadowing therapists (because of patient confidentiality, we obviously couldn't sit in for sessions, but we were allowed to ask as many questions as needed as long as they weren't specific to a patient)

-Preformed in All State in the treble chorus

- Area all State for three years (And hopefully next year too)

-All county for three years (Again, hopefully also next year)

- NYSSMA for three years, all at level six and getting a 99 and 100 (I have not done it yet this year, but I already chose my solo and its a level six)

-At least 6 hours of volunteer work (I honestly lost count which is really bad)

-I've been in multiple shows both inside and outside of school, getting two leads, one outside of school and one for the school play (I've played multiple secondary or support characters)

-Im getting published in a national book of poetry this month

-One of the two head editors for my school magazine

-won poetry contests in the area, region, and state level

-Part of a mentorship program where I mentored freshman for the first three weeks of school

I definitely think you would have a chance! Especially with your Extracurriculars and leadership demonstration. But your GPA is on the lower side. HOWEVER- It's important to note that if you got above average on the SAT, it'd offset your GPA and make you more competitive. Since you've demonstrated mentoring and creative skills, it's definitely possible! I'd say top-tier schools wouldn't be the best thing to look for- But mid-tier and state universities are a DEFINITE possibility.

Just some advice to stand out: Make sure you highlight your extracurriculars in application essays and write a GOOD one. Also, try to boost your GPA by excelling in your AP classes, as colleges will see your upward climb and note that you CAN do rigorous courses and excel in them.

Overall, yes. I do believe you would have a chance. I'd just focus on getting a good SAT score and working hard in school, as well as more job shadowing if possible!
