It's too late this year for me to drop any classes and take more engineering electives, so far the only one i've been able to take was a semester last year. I'm thinking I should load up on engineering electives for my senior year since i'll have more spaces for classes anyways, but does anyone know of any engineering classes/programs and such that i could sign up for outside of school? preferably online courses, I don't have a lot of space in the week to actually go anywhere unfortunately outside of what I already have.
Hi! I'm not exactly sure where you are, but the Santa Rosa Junior College offers loads of online classes, and I'm sure they have some engineering classes that you could take! Additionally, at your school there may be a STEM club, but if there isn't, I think (if you have the time) it would be beneficial to start one. It shows that you understand the base information of engineering and can present leadership qualities, which would buff your application essay a lot. If you do end up taking a college class while in High School, you could 100% talk about the struggles of balancing time because finding time outside of school for extracurriculars and college classes is a huge accomplishment. Regardless, be happy that you've found what you want to study in High School and not later. Often, I've seen and heard of people finally realizing what they want to major in late in their senior year. ANOTHER program you may want to consider is the National Youth Leadership Forum: Engineering! It's really fancy and while they are mostly invitational, I'm fairly sure you can apply to be a part of the program to. You get to go to a college of your choosing (of the colleges that host the program at), and it seems to be a great thing for your college resume.
Regardless of whether you take my advice, I wish you the best of luck with your future and college apps!
first I'd check nearby universities because sometimes they have different programs, or if you email professors some are more than happy to assist with any private projects that will really help buff your college applications. second I'm unaware of regular programs but I do know that mit has summer programs for engineering, which also looks good if you want to go there. I think NSLC has something for engineering too?? don't quote me on that I'm not sure
Alison.com has a lot of different courses on engineering. You can take the courses for free but have to pay for the certificate. Mind that these are often college classes. If you look at colleges, you would have to be aware of this as well. Most places charge for these classes, though. You could also look for summer programs for engineering as those can be very beneficial as well.
