Major and Career Advice

I’m currently looking at colleges and I know I love Marketing, but I’m terrified of being stuck at a desk all day. 😭 My dream is to be on the ground at brand events, Fashion Week, PR, or running social media for a sports team. I want the 'real world' experience, not just spreadsheets.

What should I actually major in to make sure I’m in the middle of the action? Is it PR? Brand Management? Communications? Help me out! Also, What would my career be called/ entail!!

You don’t need the perfectly named major; many can get you there.

Marketing

Public Relations

Strategic Communications / Communication Studies

Advertising

Even Sports Management, if you really want to commit to that.

As for the career name, that depends on which of the examples you gave. The general term that kind of encompasses all of those is public relations, but there are many, many branches of this job. Even under a specific title, your job would vary a lot between companies based on what they want from you and how they want their company, team, or brand represented.

I would recommend starting with a generic PR Major, then adjust as needed if you find a side of PR you really enjoy. Remember that choosing your major on your application is not final, and you can, with most colleges, switch very easily (which is another thing to look into when choosing a college if you're not dead set on a major or career path).
