How to make an application story?
Answered

I'm a junior planning to major in history at NYU, USC, UT Austin, or BostonU. I keep hearing people talk about having a "story" for your application, what does this mean exactly? I feel like I have pretty typical extracurriculars, (President of History Club, Captain of the Debate Team etc.) but with my gpa being pretty low (3.67) and average test scores (1412 sat, 28 act) idk how to make my application really stand out. Any ideas on how to make a story that can make my apps more competitive?

An application "story" means everything in your application should help admission officers put you together, your character. Your essays tell them that you aren't just another "good grades, let me in" applicant. The same for your extracurriculars. Your focus is on your essays though so they get all sides of you. For example, your CommonApp essay could have some details sprinkled in that you don't elaborate on because they aren't important then. Then in your supplementals, you elaborate on those details or maybe your essays are about those details entirely. Hope that makes sense! (NYU is my #1 choice too!)
