I feel like I messed up junior year for not taking AP Lang and APUSH, especially since I took AICE General Paper and AICE English Language, and haven't taken any AP History courses yet. I do have plenty of dual enrollment credits (I took DE US History and DE English Comp over the summer), but DE is definitely seen as less rigorous than AP (and I don't usually take that many at once, usually one DE course each spring and fall term and 1-2 DE courses over the summer, though recently I've been forgoing the DE courses some terms in exchange for online courses to fill prerequisites for some of the courses I will be taking next year).
I know comparison's not a great idea, but there are so many students taking all APs, and I'll only have 5 done by the end of junior year. I'll have 12 APs (my high school offers 29) and 15 DEs by the end of senior year, but it still feels so.. minuscule compared to others, who have been taking plenty of APs (and so many AICE courses) since freshman year.
It feels like I'm late to the party, I suppose. This year I took three APs: AP Calc AB, AP Chem, and AP 2D Art (and I currently have all As in them). (I wanted to take AP Seminar, but schedules got messed around, and the class ended up being full.) I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to handle it, so I decided not to take AP Lang and APUSH (instead I took English 3 Honors and US History Honors despite having the DE credits for Freshman Comp 1 and 2, and both parts of US History). I know now that I could have definitely lived with at least one more AP course, but my self doubt ended up stopping me from even thinking of switching. But there are so many students in my AP Chem class that take my entire AP schedule and do plenty more (all of them also taking AP Lang and APUSH, with some also taking AP Physics 1).
Senior year is going to be the first and only year I take APs in all core courses (plus art courses), but a part of me feels like it's too late for it to mean anything since so many juniors have already decided to do that. My extracurriculars certainly don't make up for it either, they're alright but not amazing. I've got rather minor leadership roles right now (Membership Chair for NAHS and Underclassmen Representative for Mu Alpha Theta, and I'm also a member of NHS and BETA Club). Most of my stronger leadership roles will be during senior year, but I haven't joined any STEM specific clubs despite being interested in getting a STEM degree.
I know in the long run, it doesn't really matter as long as I keep improving myself, but my mind is just refusing to let all of this go. I attend a public high school, and the current class of 2027 has around 700 students. The majority of students do not take any APs (possibly one or two at most), but the competitive minority are REALLY competitive. Even for the slightly less competitive part of the group, they're still taking APs for all their core classes, while I took only half (I took 1 AP freshman year, 1 AP sophomore year, 3 APs junior year, and if schedules don't get messed up, 7 APs senior year). I'm not trying to get into an Ivy League (not at all), but I still feel like I haven't done enough.
Your records are really impressive! Personally, I'm military so I don't have any APs and the school I'm at only has two (both history, one in 9th grade and one that you can take 11th/12th). I'm planning on taking a few honors next year (I'm also a junior) but as you can see, my records won't drop any jaws. Classes aren't everything and colleges aren't just looking to see if you took the hardest classes, especially if you couldn't handle them. They want to know if you're a student that will leave a mark whether while you're there or later. Try to see if you can make your extracurriculars more impressive. But otherwise, focus on your essays and the story you can tell with your application. The "should've, would've, could've" is just going to stress you out more than you already are. Use the past as a reference.
Thank you, I will definitely prepare for those essays. I am trying to get some higher leadership positions in the few clubs I'm in as well.
