Hello! I am about to be a senior and while everyone talks about college i have my mind set on my dream school which is san diego state, its my dream college and i was wondering do they look at you high school transcript gpa or do they use their own csu calculator? i’ve heard they use their own csu gpa calculator so it makes it even for everyone but i wasn’t sure! also my unweighted gpa is 2.8 and weighted is also 2.8 but it says my state gpa is a 3.0? so i wasn’t sure what they actually look at. But I guess my actual question is if i have a chance to actually get in? and do they look for improvement in how your grades are because my gpa before i got it to a 2.8 was a 2.7 which i know isn't a big difference but still lol
ps sorry for how long this is omg
side note: i was also apart of the softball team for 3 years, have community service hours, was in avid club, and i was a student ambassador for my cte program at my school
I definitely think you should still apply if San Diego State is your dream school. I want to be honest with you, though, because SDSU is a competitive school and admission can be difficult with a 2.8 GPA.
The good news is that the GPA SDSU/CSU looks at isn't necessarily the same as the weighted or unweighted GPA listed on your high school transcript. The CSU calculates its own “a-g” GPA using your college-prep courses, primarily grades from 10th and 11th grade, and approved honors/AP/IB courses can receive additional points. So the 3.0 “state GPA” you're seeing may be closer to the number you need to look at, but I would still recommend using the official CSU GPA calculator to calculate it yourself.
As far as your chances, I wouldn't tell you that SDSU is a guaranteed or likely admit with the numbers you currently have. SDSU is competitive, and simply being above the CSU minimum doesn't guarantee admission because campuses and majors can have higher standards when there are more qualified applicants than available spots.
That being said, I also wouldn't tell you to give up. Going from a 2.7 to a 2.8 shows that you're moving in the right direction, and if you can continue improving your grades during junior and senior year, that's something to be proud of. Your softball experience, community service, AVID involvement, and being a student ambassador also show that you're involved outside of academics. CSU campuses can consider extracurricular and leadership involvement and participation in educational programs as supplemental factors.
The biggest thing I would focus on right now is getting the strongest grades you possibly can in your remaining A-G courses and making sure you've completed all of the required A-G classes. Don't let the fact that your GPA isn't where you want it to be convince you that you shouldn't try. Apply to SDSU, but also build a balanced college list with schools where your admission chances are stronger
I am about to be a senior as well and I understand the stress of wanting to get into your dream school. I hope you get in!
