Paying for College

Can I reach out to financial aid office even before getting financial aid letter?
Answered

Hello,

Is it a good idea to reach out to an out of state college and ask if my son stands any chance of getting financial aid? We do have the estimated SAI from the new FAFSA form.

The out of state college is his first choice and so wanted to make sure we try our best to go there.

We did not receive any merit aid for this college and financial aid is the only one that is left.

Any insight / ideas are much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

I don't think it would be a great idea to reach out to the financial aid office. Unfortunately, everyone is dealing with the FASFA situation and this might just frustrate them because so many people are concerned.

However, I am not very familiar with the financial aid process. If you choose to reach out, be sure to tell them you have the estimated SAI and that you understand if they cannot give you any information yet or if the information they give you may be approximate numbers.

I think it is best to wait until after they give you their report, becuase if you reach out to them now, they will probably just see you as graveling for as much aid as possible, rather than if you wait, it would make it appear their aid did not suffiently cover your expenses. If you are just looking for information, feel free. Otherwise, wait for your letter from that office
