Paying for College

I need help on deciding whether to publish my book or enter scholarship contests with it

For some more information I am in the process of writing a book and my teacher thinks I should work to get it published but I have also considered entering scholarship contests with it. But I am torn between the two. She has told me that I may make money off of it getting it published that I can put back and use for college but I don't know if a scholarship would be more beneficial. Can anyone give me thoughts and feedback on what I should do?

I think mostly it depends on how much you care about this book. Publishing comes with a risk, but competitions come with a price. There's tons of competitions out there with contracts stating that they own your work either partially or even completely once you enter it to be evaluated. Even if the competition doesn't have these agreements, there is still no guarantee that your work will get the respect it deserves. If you care about the book, don't let it compete.
