I plan to go to college for communications (or anything relating to communications, specifically for sports broadcasting). I need an area that has a good program to eventually work for a major sports company (NFL, MLB, NBA, WWE, UFC, ESPN, etc.). I have no idea where to look. Furthermore, I currently wrestle, and would like to continue in college. I am a girl, so it is very difficult to find an opportunity. I also need to factor in which colleges would think about admitting me. So here are a few of my stats:
GPA: 4.4 weighted
SAT (Gonna redo it): 1200
EC's:
- Key Club 4 years (2 years as president)
- Theater 2 years
- Student Council 3 years
- Hope Squad 2 years
- Upward Bound 3 years
- Yearbook 4 years
- AV 2 years (By graduation, I would have 2 years of experience working with live production. I do live broadcasts of the sports games for my school). (We work with professional equipment, equipment major sports companies use).
- Flag Football 2 years
- Wrestling 3 years 2 years captain (1x District Qualifier, 1x freestyle FARGO qualifier). (This is my priority when looking at colleges, I need them to have a girl's wrestling team).
I have a part-time job, lower-middle class, first-generation, Puerto Rican (and ginger if that does anything), I have a real drive for wrestling and broadcasting, I put those 2 things above all else, and I'm already decent at both.
Any advice helps, I don't know where to go from here and time is running lower and lower. Also, if anyone knows of any scholarships that align with me, that would be helpful.
Try FAFSA! It's a federally funded grant program that you automatically get money for applying, though you get more money the lower your class. Also, most colleges have their own scholarships and work studies, so those are good things to look for in a college. Also pretty sure Iowa has a good girl wrestling; I don't play but my friend does and that's where she wants to go.
i would say any big public university like big10 or sec schools would be good for sports broadcasting in general because they have big sports team themselves. penn state is a good one but any big10 or sec school would be fine, and because they are bigger schools they most likely have girls wrestling teams.
I also really like sports broadcasting and management, I'm only an incoming Junior but my top is Penn St. They have a great program and also have a lot of alumni connections that help people get good jobs in the field
