I am a Junior in High School and may be considering going to a service academy, but I do not want to have a mandatory service commitment afterwards. I have heard of a few, but was wondering how they ranked in terms of discipline standards.
- Norwich University
- The Citadel
- Virginia Military Institute
There is a poll if you want to fill that out, but I am also open to just a discussion through the response comments.
I don't know about Norwich but VMI has the most hazing the citadel has deep tradition as a place of prep.
Oof, this is a hard one. I personally don't know too much about service academies other than West Point and the Naval Academy, but if it comes down to a stalemate, I recommend looking at the distance and other key aspects of the school. While looking at mandatory service afterwards is an important thing to look into, I recommend going deeper. Does the school have clubs you are interested in? Is it close to home? (If you want to be near your family) Or vice versa. There is a channel (Sam Eckholm) who has explored the Air Force Academy and the Naval Academy, so he might offer further resources or include other videos looking at these very schools! I 110% recommend going on YouTube and looking up either past students, current servicemen, and picking up their advice as in the end, I can only give you information that has been written down. Getting information and advice seems to be like the way to go.
Another thing to consider is branches, as they might be heavier on discipline. (The Marine Corps may be more strict than the Army) So when applying for these schools, be sure to note that too.
Best of luck!
