Searching for the Ideal Psych Program in New York

I'm a junior planning to major in psychology, and I'm particularly interested in schools located in New York State. Can anyone offer insight into which colleges there have strong psychology programs? I'm looking at everything from class sizes to faculty expertise. Let's not forget about research opportunities. Any experiences or suggestions, ya'll?

When talking about psychology programs in New York State, Columbia University, New York University (NYU), and Cornell University frequently top the list.

Columbia University is well-recognized for its psychology program which emphasizes understanding the human experience and behavior. Columbia is known for its influential faculty, who regularly contribute to the field through research. Being in New York City also allows for a wide variety of internship and research opportunities that you could take advantage of.

New York University (NYU) also offers a phenomenal psychology program. With small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio, you'd receive a more personalized learning experience. NYU emphasizes research and has a dedicated Psychology Undergraduate Research Conference where students present their findings yearly.

Cornell University, located in picturesque Ithaca, has a robust psychology department that's well-regarded in academia. Its curriculum offers a wide range of topics, including developmental psychology, social and personality psychology, behavioral and evolutionary neuroscience, perception, cognitive psychology, and psycholinguistics. At Cornell, you’d also have the opportunity to work closely with renowned faculty on research.

Notably, all these universities have vibrant research communities. They provide ample opportunities for undergraduates to participate in and even lead, research projects.

Keep in mind, however, that criteria like class size and faculty expertise can vary depending on the specific track or focus within the major, and the same goes for research opportunities. It would be ideal to explore the department webpages of these universities, reach out to current students or faculty, or attend virtual information sessions to gain a deeper understanding of each program. This will allow you to match your specific interests and academic goals to the structure and strengths of each program.

Remember that while these are all great choices for studying psychology, the best school for you will also fit your personal goals, learning style, and preferences. So, make sure to consider more intangible factors like extracurricular offerings, location, and overall campus culture as well. Even though all three schools have strong psychology programs and are located in New York State, they can differ quite a bit in terms of overall vibe, and you want to choose an institution where you'll thrive personally and socially, not just academically and professionally.
