Most selective colleges per state - is there a list or resource?

Trying to compare schools around the country and wondering if there's a list or some source I could use to find the most selective colleges in each state. Any leads on this would be greatly appreciated!

While there isn't a comprehensive list available as a single resource that details the most selective college in every state, there are quite a few ways you could gather this information. The U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard tool provides information about colleges' acceptance rates, which can help you identify some of the most selective colleges. This database allows you to sort and filter schools based on various factors, including location and admission rates.

Another option is to use a college research platform like CollegeVine. While it doesn't specifically compile data by the most selective school in each state, it does provide thorough information on each school's acceptance rate, SAT/ACT medians, and much more which can help guide your research. You can access their search engine here: https://www.collegevine.com/schools/hub

You might also find that there isn't clear consensus on the absolute most selective school in every state, especially those with larger populations and/or more institutions of higher education. For example, in Massachusetts, both Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have acceptance rates well under 5%, and the same is true in California, with Stanford University and California Institute of Technology. In these cases, minor fluctuations in acceptance rate can mean one year one school is most selective, the next year the other.

In contrast, in some other states, you'll find that there is one school that is consistently the most selective, like Dartmouth College in New Hampshire or Princeton University in New Jersey.

Finally, while selectivity can be a factor to consider in your college choices, it shouldn't be the only one. You'll also want to take into account factors like the school's size, academic programs, extracurricular opportunities, potential fit for you culturally and academically, and also the financial aspect - selectivity can be an indication of a talented student body, but it isn't everything.

Good luck in your search!
