How to have a good spike with limited resources?
Answered

I live in an area with little resources and opportunities for internships, etc, especially for my interests. I try to do what I can with what I have and what has been available to me, but how do I know its enough? Especially because areas that do not interest me (and I don't believe in pursuing something for college if I genuinely do not enjoy it) have more opportunities. I enjoy writing and the humanities, for context. What can I do? (Im a junior)

Additionally, colleges tend to look at you in the context of your community etc. For example with AP classes, taking 4 out of 6 available AP classes looks better than taking 9 out of 20 available AP classes. If you look at ECs now, you can assume that colleges will understand that ECs aren’t available or anything. However, this does put you in a unique position to start your own club which colleges like. Also, there are places in the application potentially to tell them ur situation

Hi there,

I understand where you are coming from completely. I have a similar situation and also have a passion for writing, so I hope this is helpful!

I love finding online literary reviews/ journals to submit my work to (in my case, poetry, but there are many opportunities for all types of writing)! Getting published is a great spike to have on your transcript. You can also enter essay contests, too. Many of them are free, and all you need is a computer or other device.

Another idea would be to start your own writing club, book club, etc. This is also something that shows leadership and initiation, which colleges like to see. I hope this is helpful!

It sounds like starting some sort of passion project would be a great way to start. By this, I just mean find something that you love (in your case, it could be writing/humanities related) and dig deeper into that topic.

Digging deeper could mean doing research, making a website, blog, or podcast, starting a social media platform, writing a book or article, or creating an online community. The great thing about a passion project is that you don’t necessarily need resources to do it, and it can be about literally anything you’re interested in! Plus, colleges love to see people taking initiative and starting something themselves!
