Should I submit my scores to these schools?
Answered

Hello, so I am applying to Michigan State, IU in Bloomington, and Rutgers. My standardized scores are pretty mediocre, with a 21 on the act. But my gpa and extracurriculars are above average for these schools (according to the collegevine calculator). So should I sit for any future tests (I am still taking one in October) or should I just go test optional? My counselor said that going test optional is an alright choice but I am still debating on it.

Try to give another attempt if you think you could do better. Or else go test optional.

Submitting a score lower than the 25th percentile score for all three schools is not recommended. Michigan's 50th percentile range is 23-29, IU's is 24-31 and Rutgers is 25-32. Ideally, you want to report scores in the 26-28 range to these 3 schools.

I agree with you trying to improve your score in October but would also sign up for the November date as well.

To move up from a 21 to say a 26-28, you will have to do some real test prep. Besides taking practice tests, I would recommend signing up for the SuperTutorTV course and setting aside like 15-20 hours a week to achieve that. Test prep books alone may not do the trick for you.

Good luck.
