CommonApp Questions

Hi, I'm a senior applying to EA (November 1st) through CommonApp.

My school is online due to COVID-19, so we are not allowed to meet our counselor. We can only talk to them through emails, but she doesn't give me direct answers to my questions.

Anyways, I have six separate questions.

Under the 'Courses & Grades' section, my counselor told me to choose option 'yes' for this question: Do you have 12th grade courses listed on your transcript that have been issued official transcript grades?

If I choose 'yes,' I am supposed to add my grades and school credit, but I don't have any grades yet as my school is a semester-system and our semester has not finished. Should I leave it blank. Is it okay to leave it blank because it shows this if I don't put anything: Incomplete courses & grades entered: 7

My second question has to do with HSK. For those of you who do not know what that is, HSK is the Chinese proficiency test. I took the HSK test and passed. I had put it under 'Honors' but I think I might have another honors to add and this honors is international, meaning that it might be better to put that instead of HSK. Would HSK be under 'Extracurricular Activities'?

Additionally, my school does not allow students to take more than 4 AP courses. Also, they prevented me from registering an AP exam because I am not taking the course at school (it is not offered at school). Should I write these circumstances under 'Additional Information'? I don't want it to sound like a lame excuse. Also, I already took like 7 AP exams and will probably take 4 more AP exams (if I find a way to register for all of them). I'm not sure if it's necessary for me to write this circumstance since I did take more than my class mates.

I took 3 high school math courses in middle school (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Honors Algebra 2) because I took the "advanced" math course. No one in my class has taken this course, so I am confused with whether or not I should put this under the 'Courses & Grades' and 'Other Courses' section. They are high school courses with 1.00 credit each, but I took it in middle school, so not sure if that would go under 'Other Courses.'

I have two competitions under 'Honors' that are very Asia-based, meaning Americans will have no idea what these competitions are about. Is it necessary for me to explain it in 'Additional Information' or would it be too redundant? I did describe each of them in less than 100 characters, but I don't believe that it is sufficient enough.

Lastly, I have not done any internship due to COVID-19. Should I add this under 'Additional Information' or do college admission officers already know this? Also, I live in a city in Thailand. I did not have much opportunities for contests or competitions that are related to my major. Should I put that too? Again, I don't want to be someone who makes excuses and complains about it.

Thank you for your patience. This is a long post.

1. I recommend talking about entering those grades again with your counselor. If you are unable to talk with them in time, you should choose "no" because your grades are not on your official transcript.

2. Rather than entering your HSK in the Honors section, you can report that you are proficient in Chinese in the languages section. No proof is required, since you will have to take a college's own proprietary test to place beyond introductory Chinese classes there.

3. It is not necessary to explain your AP situation because you have taken more APs than your classmates.

4. You should not report any of the classes you took in middle school. Colleges do no evaluate accomplishments from middle school in the admissions process.

5. You do not need to explain the Asia-based Honors in the Additional Information section. If colleges need more information about them, they will Google the competition names.

6. You can explain how COVID-19 limited your EC opportunities in the COVID-19 section.

Hope this helps!
