Admissions Advice

Regarding Extra Circulars.

Hello, I have this list of Extra circulars:

1.Code pen - built some websites.

2.Edx and Coursera - took some online courses that I am interested in(which are related to programming).

3.Online Class - On artificial Intelligence by university of Helsinki(Finland) and acquired 2 ECTS(European) credit.

4.Student Body Position.

5.Won first price in a debate competition in my school.

6.Created some projects using computer languages.

I just want to clarify my doubts if these are really some good activities. What kind(category like top 20/30)of universities view them as some really good activities?

Hi, thank you for asking your question! There are a few factors to consider when "ranking" your extracurriculars relative to everyone else's -- especially for selective schools. For one, you want to make sure your extracurricular is aligned with your major of interest. Secondly, you want to have a unique activity that not many high schoolers are doing that have gained recognition and awards. And third, you want to be able to show that you have dedicated significant time to the activity (hrs/wk, wk/yr).

More specifically, extracurriculars can fall into tiers based off of their impressiveness. I would check out this blog post here for more details about this, and to size up where your extracurriculars stand.
