Admissions Advice

Activity.

Hello,

I live in a big community with nearly 100 families, and I have worked to keep my community clean and safe. Can this be considered as an extra circular activity?

If yes, how can I add this to present it creatively in my application?

Are there any further problems if I add this?

Thank you.

I think it would count as an extracurricular. It would definitely be considered as community service and I believe the Common App groups community service as an extracurricular. You can probably allude to it in an essay or write about that in particular since it seems to have been very important and close to you. I'm not quite sure how else you can do that if I'm being honest.

Good luck with your applications! I'm sure you'll do great!

The word in English is “curricular”, derived from the Latin ‘curricula’; Meaning “a course of study in a school or college”. If you are required to perform outside activities for credit in your current educational institution, then, technically, anything you do that is not part of the educational offerings of the school is EXTRA-CURRICULAR, meaning not part of the regimented course of study in that class. I would confirm it with your teacher, but usually ANY volunteer, committed time providing services to a community would be EXTRA curricular as it is not part of the specific classroom program that everyone must participate in for grade. Keep volunteering and use as much detail as you can to describe the duties you perform to make your community ‘safe and clean’.

Hi @Mk34! Yes, you can definitely list this as an extracurricular. In the activities description, make sure to be specific in terms of what you did to keep your community "clean and safe" - talk about the specific activities/events you hosted, how much of a commitment it was, if you got other community members involved in it, etc. Including all of that information will give admissions committee members a clear idea of the magnitude of the work you did.

Hope that helps!
