SAT Submission?
Answered

Hi!

Recently my SAT scores came out and I got a 1430. I gave the SAT a few days before my exams and that too in my senior year of high school, making it difficult for me to score a high grade. I have a high GPA (IB DP predicted: 42), and intend on applying to top and major schools in the US. So should I send my SAT score or should I go test-optional?

What you need to do is some SAT research on past middle scores of top schools. You can easily do that for most top schools but keep in mind that some schools do not publish this data so you will have to make a best guess. For instance Columbia U. does not publish a CDS but Yale does, so I would use the Yale CDS as a proxy for the Columbia CDS. Keep in mind also that the most up to date CDS is from 2 years ago, so I would err on the side of caution and add 20pts to the range. For Yale in 2020-21 the middle 50% ranges was 1470-1560. Since they went test optional last year and this year, only higher SAT scores are being reported so that means that the middle is probably 1490-1580 now. (JHU, BC do not publish this, and CalTech, UC schools will not have SAT/ACT data since they are test blind)

I have pulled 5 schools for you with links so you know what to look for. When you want to research a CDS google search on the college name followed by common data set. e.g. "Brown Common Data Set", then in the results page, click on the most recent set which is 2020-2021. You should be looking for section C9.

If your 1430 is within say 20 pts of the 25% lower bound say Williams CDS which is 1430/1540, then I would submit to Williams. But I wouldn't submit to WashU, MIT, Yale, Columbia, Brown.

Hope that makes sense and good luck.
