Starting on College Apps
Answered

When is the "right" time to create a Common App account and start working on some college apps related things?

I am a high school junior right now, so starting on college apps is going to come soon, but I have a feeling it may be too early to start the process right now. Maybe instead of starting on my college apps, should I just open a Common App account and just tour around it just to get a feel and save the actual doing the application for a bit later?

Hello,

Discovering the Common App can be useful, and you will become familiar with the system. Organize your application materials, such as your ECs, and begin writing your resume if you want to upload one to the colleges. Even if you don't submit, having a resume will make things easier for you, so I recommend that you start there.

The school-specific supplemental essays may change, and I believe the most recent ones are released in August. You can look at this year's essay prompts if you want to get a sense of the essay prompts and if you're putting together a college list.

If you already have a resume, you can start thinking about your personal statement, which is much more specific than the college supplements.

There is no "right time" to begin your applications, but it is much healthier to begin school-specific applications during the summer and after the current prompts are released. For now, just enjoy your junior year, take the ACT or SAT if you prefer, and concentrate on your grades. Participate in college webinars or, if you live in the United States, make a visit to some campuses.

I hope this helps, and best of luck with your applications!

You should open both a Common App account and a Coalition App account and see which one you like better or both. Most HS kids are unaware that the Coaltion app actually has a lot of features that the common app does not.

There are many 9th and 10th graders who have started their Coaltion app account already. It's never too soon.

Good luck.
