Admissions Advice

coursera
Answered

I'm homeschooled (I'm a sophomore btw), and I haven't taken any AP courses, although I'm planning on taking at least 3 AP exams. I know that AP courses are really important on a transcript to get into top schools, but all the online ones are really expensive and I also missed the deadlines to apply.

My question:

I'm currently taking a Neurobiology course and a course on English lit/philosophy on Coursera. They have graded assignments and everything.

I will have certificates for these courses once I'm finished, and I was wondering if I could put these on a transcript, and if so where? Would this be an EC, or a course that I've taken...?

Thank you.

Top schools take into account the kinds of opportunities that were offered to you throughout high school. Many high schools do not have AP courses or similar programs and applicants from those schools are not at any disadvantage for that. Top schools want applicants that are remarkable and have succeeded where they are. With that said, taking courses online that you are genuinely interested in is awesome. A good place to include them on an application is the Extra Info section. Explain your circumstances of not having access to the kinds and types of courses you want (like you did here) and the courses you took with maybe a link to a certificate if you get one. You don't have to do this to "make up" for not taking AP courses and you actually shouldn't try to "make up" for them. Pursue and do things that you are genuinely interested and like and that in turn will make your application much stronger.

Those would probably go in your EC's. Look it up to double check on each of these subjects and maybe talk to a councilor. Also I am a sophomore and homeschooled! I have funding through MyTechHigh. If you join you can get free college courses through SnowOnline. This program is for any high schooler and you can receive your high school diploma through them as well. Might be worth looking into! Good luck!
