first-gen student
Answered

Okay, so I don't know if either of my parents has gone to college. Do I put that I'm a first-gen student or not?

I've watched many admission process videos by college advisors and it came to conclude that saying you are a first gen student increase your chances, because that making you a first gen increases the college's value.

Can you ask your parents? If they are unavailable maybe you can look them up to see if there are any records of them going to college. If you cannot find out I would put yourself as a first-generation student. Another option would be to call one of your prospective colleges and ask a counselor what they would suggest.

Hi @ashtheman!

Being first-gen is not about genetics. If you grew up in a household where your guardian(s) did not go to college, then most schools would consider you first-gen, because you'd lack the knowledge and connections that non-first-gen students will have.

Hope that helps!
