Hi!
I am a freshman in high school and want to go into the pre-med track in college. I've been looking into ways to make myself a good candidate for colleges and I've seen some things about internships. I was looking into medical related internships and they are not very cheap. So I was wondering, are internships worth it? Would having an internship on my applications really boost my chances? Thanks!
Even though you don't want to become a nurse you can earn money doing basic patient needs and gaining valuable experience.
Internships are really good on college applications and for you. While they are not necessary colleges like to see when you have interned in the program you want to major in because it shows you have taken initiative, and that you already know some things and will excel in that major. Interning could also help you to know fully that it is what you want to do after experiencing it. It is a lot of money, (and so is med school) but it would help you a lot. Overall if your parents think you should it is a great opportunity you should take. Good luck!
Yes! Internships are a great way to get involved in different jobs and they help a lot to give you an idea of what you want to do and what you're good at. If I could go back I definitely would've done more internships freshman and sophomore year.
Internships can look good on college applications but there are definitely things like it that you can do as an alternative. Personally, I would not want to spend a lot of money on an internship so I would cold-email doctors and other people in the medical field (it depends on your interests) and ask if I could shadow them. So, if you don't want to pay for internships, I would look into shadowing.

Because you are a freshman, I would recommend beginning your journey by taking the proper coursework like Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, Psychology, all math classes available, and a decent amount of humanities. Outside of school you could try volunteering at a nursing home or hospital to gain experience working with patients and the healthcare environment. I would wait til the summer between junior and senior year to do an internship. I would also begin taking a CNA course when you are 16
