I'm taking an intro to computer science elective as a sophomore. Its about three weeks into the semester, and I hate it. I could learn more on my own in three hours than I will in this class, and the teacher is somehow boring, patronizing, and strict all at the same time. Everyone here is taking it as a prerequisite for the AP (I'm not planning on taking the AP) or wants to drop the course. I was wondering if colleges would look at my dropping the course negatively, since I think the withdrawal would show up on my transcript.
Thanks!
Hi!
First of all, I do not believe withdrawals show up on your transcript but you should definitely talk to your counselor about that if that is what you are worried about. In my opinion, you should drop the course. It is not worth your time and energy to take a course you are not passionate about and above all have your mental health suffer because of it. Instead, I think you should drop the course and if possible take one that you enjoy. Furthermore, it will look even worse to colleges if you get a bad grade in the class as it will drop your overall GPA as well. It also doesn't look like this course matters to your future in high school so I do not believe it would negatively affect the rest of your high school career. So first talk to your counselor about if the withdrawal showing up on your transcript and then reevaluate if the course is actually worth your time and energy.
Hope this helps!
Hi, thank you for asking your question. Withdrawals from courses will show up on your transcript if you do not drop the course within around 1 week-1month of the start of the semester. If you are not interested in this class, but are doing well, then there is no harm in withdrawing, your grade will likely be on your transcript. You may want to continue taking this class however, if you do not have alternative class in mind. If you are switching to another class, make sure the class is in your area-of-interest when applying to colleges (if you have one). At the end of the day, you want to make sure you are taking courses in your area of interest, and doing really well in them for competitive admissions to top schools. This isn't to say that you can let your other class grades fall.
