I'm a senior- will one B ruin my chances of getting in and keeping my college acceptances?
Answered

I am a senior, and even though I have plenty of science credits I decided to take AP Bio.

I have always had a 4.0 unweighted GPA, and my weighted GPA is much higher. My AP Bio teacher only puts in test grades and does not offer any remediation. Sadly, I think I will only be able to get B in that class. I have plenty of extracurriculars and community service and I would hate to let one elective ruin my otherwise fine record.

I have gotten into 2 schools already, and a B wont hurt my chances at those schools, but will it hurt my chances at 3 competitive schools I am awaiting decisions from?

1 B on your HS senior mid-year report will not affect your admissions results. I think a C or D would raise a yellow/red flag but not a singular B. Plus we are talking about a hard weighted AP Class so they will give you credit for gutting it out when other people might have dropped or withdrawn it or opted for a PASS/FAIL.

Don't spend any more time worrying about it. It's nothing you need to alert the 3 colleges about. It's clear to me that Admissions Officers are used to seeing Senior grades drop off a little because Sr. is very stressful and complicated. You have to apply to colleges, maybe take another SAT or ACT, do all sorts of Senior activities, hone or tweak your ECs and spike activities plus we are still in the middle of a global pandemic.

I hope this helps.

One B will not hurt your chances, especially because it was in a rigorous AP class. Your B will hardly make a dent in your GPA, and assuming that will be your only B by graduation, your GPA will be in the high 90th percentile even at the most competitive schools. College admissions is also holistic, so admissions readers will pay more attention to other parts of your profile than your one B. Hope this helps!

Not to get you down or anything but a lot of colleges don't focus a lot on your GPA. If you have a fantastic SAT or ACT score that's one of their main focuses. That and the essays you complete to get in. A single B will probably not hurt very much. Good Luck!
