My desired major would be design and applied arts, I'm a junior and I want to start building a solid portfolio but I'm not sure what I should be putting into it.
I want a portfolio that will stand out to colleges, and that might give me a better chance of acceptance. I work mostly will digital art but I'd like to challenge myself and use mediums outside of my comfort zone, but I'm unsure of where to start. I'm wondering basically, what colleges are and aren't looking for in an applied arts portfolio.
Have you taken AP 2D Art and Design? You should definitely consider taking that, it's a very easy AP and you spend the year making pieces for a portfolio instead of taking a typical AP exam. I'm currently in it, also a junior, though I don't intend to go to college for art. Pretty sure you can do digital art as a medium, but you're not limited to one! This could be a great opportunity to apply the skills you already have but also experiment with other mediums, as yes, a diverse portfolio may look better than one that is purely digital art by reflecting your passion for art as a whole. A 5 on your AP portfolio, comprised of 15 pieces part of your "sustained investigation," and at least 5 others, will certainly draw colleges' attention. Otherwise, you should speak to your art teacher and/or counselor about the best course of action. Good luck!
If you look under admissions on a colleges website they usually list the portfolio submission criteria for each department. I would look at what different schools are asking to give yourself a general idea of what to create. Typically you'll submit 10-20 pieces. Some schools like digital art, while others don't so it depends on where you want to go. Just remember to take risks and showcase who you are through your art.
