Rec letter advice
Answered

Hi!

What can I do during the remainder of my junior year to get really strong letters of rec? How can I better connect with my teachers?

Thanks!

Here are some tips!

1. Make it seem like you are an enthusiastic member of class. Participate, ask questions connecting the topics you are currently learning back to old material, help others in your class, etc.

2. Outside of class, send an email to your teacher asking for clarification on a certain topic or project. This shows that you are dedicated to the class both in and out of the classroom.

3. When it comes to asking a teacher, DO NOT ask during class. You can arrange to meet with them outside of class, or if you are uncomfortable with that, send them an email. No matter how you ask, make sure you indicate that you are asking because you think they have really impacted your education/have made you a better person or learner/have furthered your interest in the subject they teach.

4. When you ask the teacher, give/send them your resume if you have one, and tell them that they are welcome to ask for information/paperwork about your scholastic or extracurricular information.

I wish you the best of luck!

I think the simple thing you can do could be to join clubs and extracurriculars around your campus. Most teachers are advisors for most clubs at my school and typically if you're heavily involved with the club as a board, executive or general member you'll stand out to them. I would try to stay away from the teachers you have for just a year or teachers that just know you for your academics. Typically in strong letters of recs, teachers like to talk about qualities and who you are as a student outside of the classroom. Since it's your junior year, try looking into talking to them and see if they need help. The earlier you start getting to know them, they'll also get to know you as a person as well.
