I am planning on going to business school, my reach/hard target schools are UPenn, Cornell, UMichigan, Northeastern, and Carnegie Mellon. I'm guessing the answer is no because my chances suck anyway (my school is extremely competitive and I'm simply not quite Ivy material), but I want to be sure.
I'm sure you have run the numbers and realize that Yale is perhaps 20+ percentage points lower than the probabilities for the other 5 schools, so it's really a Hard Reach.
However, I think I would apply because being a legacy might equalize the % chances so they are similar to UPenn, Cornell non-legacies applications.
Cornell and UPenn are both ivies, so if you think you have a shot at those, it couldn't really hurt to apply to Yale- especially since you're a legacy. Your school being competitive might actually help you because it might indicate your work ethic and effort are strong, even if you're not at the very top of your class. You should actually plan on going if you get accepted, though; if you don't like the school, don't fit with the vibe of the school, or don't plan on attending, there's no point in applying.
if I could apply to Yale as a legacy I would, regardless of what anyone says.
