Classroom Aide for senior year?

I am finalizing my course selection for senior year within these next few weeks and have been notified that my elective, Advanced Business Technology, will not be running next school year. My guidance counselor presented me with a list of potential replacements, and there weren't any good/challenging ones. However, one of those was a classroom aide opportunity. I am only doing it for my Honors Geometry and AP Statistics teacher, who has been an important mentor for me throughout my high school years (he has also been my teacher for 2 of 3 years). They told me I would be doing administrative tasks and supporting other students in lower-level classes. I believe it would be better for my career and my high school experience if I were to do this, compared to a study hall. I am considering education (in particular secondary education + mathematics) as a career option. That teacher has inspired me to become a teacher of my own, and I want to experience the profession (near) first-hand. He also wanted to guide me in that path. It is only one period, but of course, it could be viewed in different ways.

However, I understand I am not taking a necessarily challenging replacement to my elective, but I am taking four AP classes next year and college-level English. Instead of a study hall (or even compared to some who take late arrival to school), I wanted to know how you and others view this on a schedule for senior year because I am still unsure if I want to pursue this. It would not be a grade calculated in my GPA but it will just show up on my schedule/transcript.

Thanks for your advice everyone!

Greetings ryanmcohs2023,

Your choice will depend on a couple of factors.

First, do you plan on going to any of the top 25 colleges?

If so, I recommend developing your "spike" instead (which I infer to be mathematics from your description), like working with the local college on math research (I suppose if you don't select an elective you will have a free period).

If not, then by all means become an aide for this teacher. You've listed great reasons, and I know that it will most definitely help you prepare for a future career in math teaching. Moreover, if you need a recommendation letter you can bet he will write an astounding one because you paid the favor (his impact and guidance if you become an aid) forward.

Regards,

Eric B.
