As a freshman in highschool, I feel like I can do just about anything and take any opportunities. This is great and I am happy about this, but I have no idea what colleges are looking for. What will make me a better candidate? I understand that choosing a college won't be for another couple of years, but I don't want to lose any opportunities. What should I spend my time doing during my highschool years? What if my highschool doesn't offer ways to really advance?

Find a few things you're passionate about and try to stick to them throughout highschool! It's better to dedicate yourself thoroughly to a few clubs rather than to spread yourself thing. Try to find community service opportunities!

Mostly, schools are looking for international activities. For example, they prefer the diploma for participation in ICPC over winning an award on the national competition. Also, if you are volunteering, you will probably have many opportunities to participate in conference or similar events. They will look cool in your activity list.

Many of competitions or volunteering organizations does not require your school to participate - you can sign yourself on your own(UNICEF, Red Cross, etc.). The case there is your motivation, inspiration to actually make something interesting, and, of course, research. You should research a lot for those opportunities. Good luck to you. Hope this will help you.

Hi!

We never really know what colleges are looking for. Of course, you can see your high-level DECA president that has all these national awards getting into Harvard but, personally, I believe if you go into unique and different extracurriculars that make you happy, you have a higher chance of getting in.

Just focus on things you enjoy (above all else), and try really anything. Even if you think you won't like something, just try it! Even for a month or so, just give it a shot.

Finally, put TIME into your activities. It really doesn't matter what you do, just do it well. That's really the best advice I can give.

I hope this helped! Good luck and enjoy high school!!! :D
