If I was just a member in a club, how to describe role on common app?
Answered

I’m planning on joining my new school’s anime/Japanese culture club and I don’t think I’d be able to get any kind of leadership position since I’m new & a rising senior. I plan on including it in my common app as I have an interest in Japanese and it’s apart of my personal narrative

Do I just say I was a “member” under leadership/position in common app or is there a better way of describing it

Hi!

If you are absolutely certain you cannot get even a small leadership position, I would put “member,” but also include what you did in the club.

Maybe you helped educate other members about your experiences with Japanese culture, offered small tutoring sessions, made posters that attracted new members, etc. Maybe you can even implement an online “chat space” for members of the club to talk about whatever they want (this could be on TEAMS, Zoom, Discord, etc.) - really just anything to show you really were involved.

Hope this helped! :)

Hi there,

I think that you should just put "member" or "participating/dedicated member" under the position in the common application. Maybe you can ask for a smaller leadership position (treasurer, social media person, etc.) to make it seem better than just being a member.

Hoped this helped! :)
