I got a 1390 in my 1st SAT attempt so should I reappear for the exam?
Answered

I'm from India and here the SAT is held once in 3 months, plus my coursework is very different from that of the SAT syllabus so it's a lot of preparation on top of my 12th grade work. But I'm willing to reappear if I can't get into good colleges with the above mentioned SAT score. So what should I do?

I would say it depends on what you consider a good school. That score is generally too low for the ivies, unless every other aspect of your application is stellar. However that score is good for some of the top public schools in the country, such as University of Michigan, University of Florida, UNC, etc. This is also just a strong score in general, social considering what schools you want to apply to and the other aspects of your application, it should serve you well.

A 1390 is a great SAT score that will qualify you a most US Colleges. However if you are interested in Top 50 schools which covers the span of Ivy League colleges, top Liberal arts colleges, Elite Universities lie NWestern, MIT, Rice JHU, WashU, or even 2nd tier colleges like Boston College, Boston University, U Mich, UVA, then you should not submit your SAT score because it's about 100 points too low. You want a 1500+ especially if you are an International applicant.

Your decision to retake the test should be based on your college list you have created for yourself and the major you are applying for, not by asking people on CV who don't have that information. If you are planning to be a STEM major and study CS or Engineering, then you will even need a 1500 at schools like GeorgiaTech, Virginia Tech, UTAustin, UCBerkeley.

This is fantastic youtube video to watch because it breaks down what kind of schools you qualify for based on your SAT score.

Good luck.

Hello! It depends on what colleges you plan to apply to. Does the SAT score of 1390 fall within the upper 50% range? If so, your score is considered to be "good enough." If your score falls below the 50% range, you might consider taking the SAT again.

For example, my state university has a SAT middle range score of 1340. A SAT score of 1390 will be sufficient. However, a private school like Duke, you would need at least a 1440.

However, if the colleges you apply to are test optional, you can decide if you want to share the score or not. If you decide not to share your SAT score, then rigor, grades and compelling story will need to be top notch.

I would say that you should first look at the SAT policies of the schools on your list. If your top choice schools are test optional, then you do not need to retake the exam. If they do require a test score submission, and your SAT score is not in the top 75% of scores for admitted students, then I would recommend retaking it. Hope this helps!
