Hello, there. I'm an incoming sophomore and I am wondering if my current extracurriculars are good enough for some nice colleges. For context, I am interested in the intersection of computer science, biochemistry, and humanitarianism through innovation and writing. Plus, how can I expand on these activities?
Established extracurriculars:
- Nonprofit: I co-founded a nonprofit with a friend about teaching kids in our area computer science and tech. We're in the budding stage right now. We've been approved, but we're just getting our organization up and running.
- Speech & Debate: I'm a member, but I hope to gain more awards.
- Sci Teens: Volunteer organization at my local museum this summer.
- Umunna Houston: I'm the Director of Education for this social club for Nigerian youth in our area. It's pretty new, so we haven't done much yet.
- Student Council: I'm just a delegate, but I want to go out for Class President in my junior year.
- STEM Club: I was a member this year, but I was chosen to be our Coding Officer. I'll be planning coding lessons and a hackathon (hopefully!!)
- VOBY: Sort of the Black Student Union at my school; freshman class rep and now sophomore class rep.
- Robotics Team: I think I'll stay in this, but I don't know if I can put a bunch of time into it.
Tentative Extracurriculars:
- Fundraiser/Organization: I'm really excited about this. My mom supports an orphanage in Nigeria and I have some ideas for how I can help out whether that's tutoring or raising awareness/donations.
- Research: A work in progress, but I hope to do science fair competitions.
- Tennis: I'm starting lessons this summer, and I hope to get on the team next year.
- Magazine/podcast: Starting with a friend; it's about tech, universities, etc.
- Model & Dancer, ORA USA: This summer I will be modeling/dancing at our Nigerian cultural pageant.
So I am an incoming sophomore as well so take my advice with a grain of salt but I think that while these are good, not enough are solidified are yet. Make sure that in whatever you do, you have a high role or a certain level of prestige. Like for example, you said you do speech and debate, so I would advise you to focus on qualifying at NCFLS. You said you do Robotics, try to get your team to worlds. Don’t get me wrong, your extra curriculars are good, but you need to develop them. Also try to make tennis as varsity sports always look nice especially when have been doing them since freshman or sophomore year. Hope this helps.
To keep this community safe and supportive:
Hi! Our robotics team got 36th in worlds this year, but I’m unsure if I want to be heavily involved. I want to get to nationals in debate and I hope to get on varsity tennis next year.
