I'm in 11th grade, and I already know what colleges I want to apply to; my chances are in the 90s and '80s. Would it completely ruin my chances if I had a horrible college essay? What if the rest of my profile was good, but my essay was still horrific?
Okay so going off Collegevine: https://blog.collegevine.com/how-important-is-the-college-essay/
The college essay is generally worth 25% of the whole application. BUT if the school you're applying to is super selective or small, then the essay will matter a lot more than if the school were super big or less selective. Also if you apply with the intent to major in something like journalism, then it would not look good.
If you have a good profile then I wouldn't say that a horrible college essay would completely ruin your chances. But it would still hurt your application and make you a weaker candidate.
The article contained in the link goes a lot more in-depth than I do so if you want more details you can definitely read it!

Thank you for the answer. The college I want to go to is as, you said, big and less selective. And luckily, my major is not going to be journalism or something similar.
