Is this a passion project? And how can I better it?
Answered

For the past few months, I've been posting on an instagram account called slavicarchives as a form of my own exploration of slavic culture. I only have about 160 followers, but would this be considered a passion project? I plan on either majoring in economics or international relations by the way.

Also if this is considered a passion project, how can I improve it to get at a level that people will be stunned by or interested.

Thanks!

Hi @lostinlosing!

Having an Instagram where you showcase a hobby/interest like that will help you stand out to admissions officers, even if you don't have tons of followers. I think the best way you can improve it is to focus on quantifiable metrics — namely, posts per week and followers.

You want the page to be active, so making content at least "weekly" is important (but you want to be able to say something like "3x a week"). Followers might come with increased activity, but the best way to ramp that up in short notice is to follow people so they follow you back.

You'd have to be careful with this — both as a high schooler and to avoid spam detection — so I'd stick to following accounts that make similar content ("sovietvisuals" is one I'm familiar with). Share their content in your stories and hope they do the same in return.

Lastly, the best way you can amplify the impact of this extracurricular is to use it as inspiration for one of your essays. Writing about how you got into it and what you've learned will be a great way to help this part of your application stand out.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

I think it would be considered a passion project but if I'm wrong someone should correct me.

Since it started as a personal exploration, you should add more to it so that it would be seen as more of a project to other people including colleges.
