Extracurriculars for biomed engineering?
Answered

I plan on majoring in biomedical engineering at Georgia Tech or MIT and I want to know what extracurriculars (i.e. internships, clubs) might possibly be out there that I can do. I've tried looking for internships but right now, I can't find any biomed engineering companies that allow high schoolers to intern with them (if you know any companies, feel free to let me know please :,) ). Right now the only club that I can find that involves biomedical engineering is TSA because they have a biotech event (which I was unable to participate in last year).

I am not sure about internships specific to BM engineering, but here's a website for university summer courses I found:

https://study.com/academy/popular/biomedical-engineering-summer-programs-for-high-school.html

You could always do general STEM-based activities. Since it's a more niche course, I'm sure universities would understand a lack of specific biomed activities.

You could also look at what specific areas BM eng is related to - depending on your interests, you could look at other activities in engineering, medicine, or product design. Computer science related activities might also be helpful. You could then show your interest in BM eng specifically by talking in a supplementary essay question about how your activities and the skills you gained relate to BM eng, even though you couldn't do any specific biomed activities.

In terms of clubs, are there any science-related clubs available to you? Perhaps there are societies for prospective majors, such as engineering societies.

Overall though, your extracurriculars don't have to be very closely linked to your selected major. As long as you do things that you are passionate about, colleges will see you are a well-rounded person. Since extracurriculars are generally about what you do beyond the classroom, I don't think that not having a BM eng EC would be a big factor in your application.

Personally, I am also considering the same major (among 4 other options), and I have just been doing a few STEM things (an olympiad and hackathons). The rest of my ECs are mostly arts or debate based, which have nothing to do with my potential intended majors, but I feel they show what I am passionate about outside of my classes.

Hi!

I would recommend cold emailing professors that relate to your interests and ask if you could intern over the summer. Make a spreadsheet with local professors who conduct research in your topics of interest to make the process more organized.

You could also start your own club at school that surrounds biomed engineering with fun activities to get people engaged! Also, your ecs can simply surround STEM in general because it shows that you are generally interested in the field.

I had similar interests in high school and, i got help from a free mentor at learners empowered who helped me figure out my ecs and even get some up and running (let me know if you're interested!).

But i wish you the best of luck!!
