Hello,
I'm currently a Junior about to go into my senior year, my unweighted GPA is a bit lower than where I want it due to a class or two over my sophomore year. This was the main pandemic year where everything was remote which affected my learning greatly. Since then I've been able to recover my junior year. Throughout my three years in high school I've always taken the most rigorous classes available, all honors and AP.
I was wondering if waiting until my first trimester of senior year grades are posted would be a good idea in comparison to just applying earlier with my current GPA as is. I feel like I would much prefer waiting for my senior grades as it would add even more AP classes and honors classes to my transcript; however I'm not sure if this would effect my chances as obviously this would push me back to the regular decision deadline for most colleges.
Yes, I would do regular decision unless u have already taken a lot of AP classes and gpa is not under 3.7 or 3.8 because some schools have low oos admit rates for RD. I, myself, am waiting to submit for RD because I have loading up on AP classes and want colleges to see that I can fit well in those classes or otherwise I would be going for EA.
Hi @jrhutch,
It depends on how low your GPA is and where you're applying. Having your grades dip during COVID is understandable, and demonstrating an upward trajectory during your junior year (with rigorous courses) will help soften the blow.
But if your GPA is well below the average range for accepted students, then it might be worth waiting for Regular Decision. You do get a boost from applying early, though, and there is the chance for deferment. So I'd say it depends on whether your current GPA is so low for that school that you don't really meet the threshold.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions.
