The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are a really big deal that can come with pretty substantial college scholarships--there's a large number of awards given out, and for most of them you can win awards on both a regional and national level.

Also, check out your local public library. Oftentimes, they offer short story, poetry, and memoir contests.
